General Mikhail Kostarakos
Chief of HNDGS

 

General Mikhail Kostarakos was born in Thessaloniki in 1956. He was admitted to Evelpidon Military Academy in 1974 and in 1978 he was commissioned as Artillery 2nd Lieutenant. He attended all Hellenic Field and Air Defence Artillery Schools, as well as the Hellenic Army War College and the Hellenic National Defence College. He also attended AA Guided HAWK Missile System Courses in the USA (Fort Bliss, TX) and in Belgium (NPC, Glons).


During his military career, he was assigned to several Artillery and HAWK Units, as well as to national and international Staff assignments.  He assumed  the command of B' Btry of 199 SP Arty Battallion, as well as the command of 117 Field Artillery Battalion, of 181 Air Defence Artillery Battalion, of 96 Military Command at Chios Island (brigade level), of “EVROS” XII Mechanised Infantry Division, of C’ Army Corps and of the NATO Deployable Corps-Greece.


He served at Division Artillery Command/XVI Mechanized Infantry Division as Military Assistant to the Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff, as Director of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff to C’ Corps / NDC-GR, as Joint Operations Center Director to KFOR,  as Hellenic Army General Staff / 3rd Office (Current operations) as well as Director of Operations Division. He served twice in NATO International Military Staff, Brussels, both at the Intelligence and Operations Divisions.


He holds both a Bachelor’s Degree in Law of the University of Athens Law School and a Master’s Degree on “Diplomatic and Strategic Studies”. He speaks English and French.


On November 1st 2011, upon decision of the Governmental Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence, he was promoted to General and assumed the duties of the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.
